Our guest on our premier episode is Mark Quimby, the Director of National Field Operations at Security Engineers Incorporated.  Our host is Russ Dorsey, President of the InfraGard Birmingham Members Alliance and Principal & CIO at Kassouf.  Mark talks to us about the challenges of protecting public spaces and commercial venues during large events, like the upcoming World Games.  Mark also notes several things that smaller organizations can do with existing resources and limited budgets, between now and July 10th.

The World Games (TWG) is a multi-discipline sporting event overseen by the International World Games Association and recognized by the International Olympic Committee. The 2022 World Games will be the largest international sporting event in the Southeast since the 1996 Olympics and largest international sporting event in Alabama’s history. Similar to the Olympics, the World Games spans multiple venues and multiple days, taking place July 7-17 at 25+ venues around Birmingham. Approximately 3,600 athletes from 100+ countries will participate.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are coordinating the security for this unprecedented event with state and local law enforcement. Expect an increase in law enforcement presence, both in uniform and plain clothes. When attending events, expect security similar to what you’d see at a national championship or SEC championship game (clear bag policy, metal detectors).

Unfortunately, criminal activity is always a risk when large crowds gather.

BE SAFE.

If you witness or are involved in a dangerous situation, seek safety and dial 911.

BE AWARE.  IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.

Notify the first available law enforcement officer or venue security if you see anything suspicious.
